A light brown skinned man, maybe central or South American, in a light striped shirt, bow tie, and Panama-style hat at a jaunty angle sits on roughhewn wooden bench with a black cat and tabby cat scooped up in his arms. The tabby seems to be trying to make an exit.ALT

Very dapper man with premium kitten accessories. Photo from my collection, no date/info.

Black and white photo of a middle aged white man wearing a suit and sitting outside of a porch. He is looking studiously down at the longhaired tabby cat and longhaired tabby kitten that he holds in his lap.ALT

Marveling at the miracle of puff. Photo from my collection, no date/info.

tired of people acting like the fact that medinat yisrael is only 77 years old means that its only history exists within and around those 77 years. “my grandma is older than isntreal lol” your grandma goes to church every sunday and recites psalms originally composed by david the king of *checks notes* poland i guess

Your grandma is older than most nation states in Asia and Africa. Wonder why this unremarkable fact becomes exceptional and damning in exactly one case hmmmm

yeah

You know, I was thinking about something related to this argument the other day, and I feel like I’ve kind of hit the fuzzy nebulous edge of something without fully being able to articulate it, so here we go:

Why is it “the state of” Israel, anyway?

We don’t say “the state of Egypt” or “the state of Russia.” Even looking at newer countries, we don’t say “the state of Czechia” or “the state of South Sudan.” I hear “the state of Iran” once in awhile, but even that isn’t consistent. I hear “the country of Iran” far more often.

So…why is it “the state” instead of “the country”? And why is it only Israel and Palestine?

Except we do say the Czech Republic.

That’s the old name of the country, though, isn’t it? Like it would be correct to say “the country of the Democratic Republic of Congo” because that’s the official country name.
